A "burning" question..(pun intended)

I'm training for my first of 3 Triathlons this summer (all sprint distances - 500m swim, 13-17 mile bike, and 3 - 4 mile runs), the first one is in two weeks. I'm still about 15-20 lbs from my goal weight and wanted to know about reducing or optimizing my caloric intake while doing such intense workouts so that I can shed this excess flubber.

What would be the safest way for me to decrease my calories so that i can loose the weight but keep myself energized to compete?

I am in pretty good shape, but I still have about 8 lbs of fat that just won't come off - especially around the waist, unattractive back-fat and thighs. I do an intense cardio work-out 3 times a week (usually 40 minutes of swimming, biking or running) and do a weight workout 2ce a week.

I don't have that much time to work out, so I was wondering what the single best thing I can do to get rid of that fat. Is it increasing the intensity of the cardio, length of it or adding more workouts to the week? I want my flat bikini tummy back for the summer! Love your blog and would really like to pick your brain on this one!

Do you think working out 3x a week for 23 minutes is optimal fitness?

If you're really intense about the workouts, and they include aerobic and anaerobic?

I believe there is a study from Michigan University...

Warmly,
